Behind the Scenes: Amethyst Cascade Earrings

by April Williams

Today I thought I would do something a little different. I thought you all may enjoy a look behind the scenes as I created these Amethyst Cascade Earrings.  I created these earrings as part of the 2018 Earring Challenge on Instagram. (See my other entries here!)

Amethyst Cascade Earrings

The first item on the agenda was to get my supplies. In this case it was 6 amethyst cabochons (as pictured), 6 fine silver bezel cups, and 10 equal lengths of silver wire.

Silver Strips

Once I had all of my supplies, I began creating silver links to solder to my bezel cups. I formed each piece of wire into a circular link.

Silver Links

Once all of my links were created, I began to add solder to the tips of the links.  By adding the solder to the tips of the link, it becomes easier to attach the link to the bezel cup.

Link Soldering

Once my link it ready, I add heat and solder it to the bezel cups. Two cups (the bottom two) get one link attached. The other four cups had links soldered to both the top and bottom of the bezel cup.

Finished Bezel Cups

At this point, I placed the bezel cups into my specialized cleaning liquid and left them for a little while. When I came back, the brown color seen in the picture was gone. I removed the bezel cups from my cleaning liquid, rinsed them off, and then placed them into my tumbler to get shiny and harden.

After the tumbling process was complete, it was time to set the amethyst stones. I added the amethyst to each bezel cup, reserving the darkest stones for the bottom two bezel cups. Using a bezel roller and stone pusher, I proceeded to smooth the edge of the bezel cup over each stone to secure it into place.

Set Amethyst Stones

I finished these earrings by adding special connectors to each link and an earring wire to the top link.

Drop me a line and let me know what you think about how these amethyst earrings were made!
